I’m in my mid fifties and I have known that I’m nonbinary since before there was a word for it. I was a tomboy when I was a kid, and when I was a teenager we called being nonbinary “gender bending”. There was no internet and no general information (this was even before Section 28 came in).

I knew I was not a girl when I was a small child, even before I met my first gay friend who told me the term gender-bender.

The first known gender neutral person in modern history was Public Universal Friend in the 1700s.

There were loads of trans and nonbinary people in the 1800s — e.g., Dr James Barry (F to M), the Chevalière d’Éon (M to F) — in many different cultures. And also in the 1900s — e.g., Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore (1940s nonbinary lesbian artists), and many others.

We have always been here.

THERE IS NO TREND OR EPIDEMIC OF KIDS BEING TRANS OR NON-BINARY.

IT'S SIMPLY THAT MORE KIDS HAVE THE WORDS TO DESCRIBE WHO THEY ARE AND FEEL SAFER
TO COME OUT.
