The Sun came up

It was May Morning this morning and all the Morris dancing made the Sun come up.

But wouldn’t it have come up anyway, I hear you ask.

For the answer to that question, Terry Pratchett had an answer, in The Hogfather, where the sun will not rise unless the Hogfather rides safely home.

“WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF YOU HADN’T SAVED HIM?”
“Yes! The sun would have risen just the same, yes?”
“NO.”
“Oh, come on. You can’t expect me to believe that. It’s an astronomical fact.”
“THE SUN WOULD NOT HAVE RISEN.” …
“Really? Then what would have happened, pray?”
“A MERE BALL OF FLAMING GAS WOULD HAVE ILLUMINATED THE WORLD.”

— Terry Pratchett, The Hogfather

Similarly, in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, CS Lewis points out that there’s more to stars than merely being a giant flaming ball of gas. I’ve always loved this passage about the star Ramandu, which I referenced in one of my recent poems, The uncomplaining stars.

“In our world,” said Eustace, “a star is a huge ball of flaming gas.”
“Even in your world, my son, that is not what a star is but only what it is made of…

CS Lewis, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

When you see the world in a mythopoeic way, stars are never merely stars.

Check out the photos of Idylwild Morris dancing up the sun in Hespeler, Ontario, on May Morning 2022. You’re welcome!

“We were up long before the day O
To welcome in the summer,
To welcome in the May O
For summer is a-coming in
And winter’s gone away O”
